12/4/2023 0 Comments Chateau ventoysDown we went to the floor below which was strange and dark. We were shown down winding corridors and into a small lift that seemed to disappear behind the entrance to a bar (in fact, we could not locate it when we searched for it later!). We reeled back on the doorstep and contemplated our options as it was not what we were expecting. It could almost be the opening to the weird rabbit hole! This erstwhile home of the Marquis de Sade is both bizarre and strange and at first glance it is not inviting. We also found a dead scorpion on the floor which was rather unwelcome!! The food was our saviour though as we both chose the set menus! I opted for homard de Bretagne which if you love lobster (like me) was a treat to the taste buds and truly delicious! My other half had the cheaper set menu but at €39 was very good value and she even thought it was one of the best meals she has ever had!! So in conclusion a nice little stop over for our third night with wonderful food but let down by the rather simple bedroom and uncomfortable bed!Īlice in Wonderland was first published 150 years ago, and this strange place could well have served as an inspiration behind that amazing tale! It is not impossible to imagine that Lewis Carroll visited the ancient village of Mazan (near Carpentras) and wound his way up the narrow lane to the side door that leads to the unimposing entrance of the Chateau de Mazan. Our room was very simply furnished and the bed was too low to the ground and small. Could have done with a more relaxed and comfortable room to unwind in. ![]() ![]() Arrived in torrential rain which didn't help! The place itself is very charming although it's rather oddly furnished, quirky comes to mind but so does weird, strange but charming all at the same time! Due to the poor weather there was no where to really sit down and relax apart from the hall area where we had coffee.
